Dostal Alley in Central City: Family-Run Brewpub, Pizza, Patio, and Gaming

When we picture a casino, our minds invariably drift towards the mega-casinos of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. However, across the country, there are countless other casinos of varying sizes and styles. One of our goals is to showcase these unique casinos and the experiences that they have to offer. We’ll be starting with Dostal Alley, a hybrid brewpub and casino. While many casinos prominently feature drinks, Dostal Alley is where a trip to the pub meets a trip to the slots.

We spoke with a representative from Dostal Alley about what made their location special. You can read the Q&A interview below.

How would you describe the culture and atmosphere of your casino?
Dostal Alley is a place where the community comes together. Locals and visitors alike can relax, share a drink, play a game, or catch up with friends. Everyone is welcome here, and the space feels like home in the heart of Central City

What inspired the creation of your casino, and what vision still guides you today?
The creation of Dostal Alley was inspired by the Schmalz family’s desire to contribute to Central City’s economy while creating a space where locals and visitors could gather. From the beginning, the goal has been to offer more than just gaming, Dostal was envisioned as a welcoming, community-oriented destination where people can connect, celebrate, and enjoy great craft beer. That vision continues today, guiding every decision and ensuring the casino remains a personal, inviting place that reflects the town’s character and charm.

What makes your casino different from larger, corporate-style gaming destinations?
Dostal Alley stands apart because it’s locally owned, family-run, and housed in a historic 1874 building. Unlike corporate casinos that focus on size and spectacle, Dostal emphasizes personal service, charm, and character. As a casino-brewpub, we offer an intimate gaming experience with 41 slot machines and 12 video poker machines, alongside a full-service bar, kitchen, and onsite brewery. Our focus is on quality and connection, creating a space where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re here to play, enjoy a pint, or both.

Who are the people behind the scenes that help shape the guest experience?
The Schmalz family is at the heart of everything we do at Dostal Alley. From Lisa cooking pizzas to CinDee checking in with guests and Buddy brewing beer or changing kegs, family members are personally involved in day-to-day operations. Their presence ensures that every guest enjoys a friendly, welcoming experience, whether they’re playing a game, having a meal, or enjoying one of our beers

What game, table, or experience has become a favorite among your regulars — and why?
Among regulars, the upstairs video poker machines are a standout favorite. Guests love pairing a pint of Dostal beer with the relaxed, social atmosphere at the bar, making it as much about hanging out with friends as about the game itself. The combination of casual gaming, good drinks, and a friendly environment keeps people coming back again and again.

When is the best time to visit, and what kind of atmosphere can guests expect during that time?
The best time to visit Dostal Alley depends on what you’re looking for. Weekends tend to be lively, full of social energy and conversation, while weekdays offer a more relaxed experience. Throughout the year, we host monthly casino promotions, giving guests something new to enjoy no matter when they visit.

What should a first-time visitor know before walking through your doors?
First-time visitors should know that Dostal Alley is a true family-run operation. Open since 1991 and brewing beer since 1998, our beers have earned national recognition, including six Great American Beer Festival awards. Beyondthe brewery and casino, supporting the community is central to what we do, from fundraising for the local school to donating beer to the Opera Association. Visiting Dostal means more than playing the machines or enjoying craft beer, it’s about becoming part of Central City’s story.

While someone is visiting, what else should they check out while they’re in the area?
Just under an hour west of Denver, Central City is a historic mountain town perfect for a day trip. Visitors can stroll Main Street to admire the old buildings, explore the Gilpin History Museum, or enjoy local art at the Gilpin County Arts Association Gallery, and a short walk up the street brings you to the Teller House, home of the famous Face on the Barroom Floor! This summer, the Central City Opera will perform The Marriage of Figaro, The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Master Class. If you enjoy beer festivals, in August we help host the Great Central City Beer Festival right on main street. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Maryland Mountain trails and cap the day with a pint of our Maryland Mountain Wheat on our patio. Whether you’re here for the history, outdoor adventures, or just a relaxing drink, Central City offers something for everyone.
